Come and join us as we explore the amazing potential of building natural, sustaining structures from local material using traditional framing techniques and natural enclosure methods that have been practiced for thousands of years.

Perfecting beauty
TIMBER FRAMING July 6th- 17th.  We will be constructing a 30’ by 30’ Timber Frame octagon using a combination of square dimensional timber and naturally curved round timber which has been gathered within a half mile of the workshop site using horses.  We will cover design and hand layout methods for both round and square timber to produce perfect joinery and instill a sense of craftsmanship in all our students.   We will also go through the steps for laying out and executing compound roof framing using natural joinery. 
We encourage all seeking a desire for change in the world by starting right at home! This 14 day intensive will give the tools for all aspects of the building process so you walk away empowered for the green revolution. No skipped steps, all details divulged, you'll leave ready to create healthy, green and everlasting dwellings.  Experience handcrafting! No matter what your profession.


TOOLS
A basic list of hand tools to bring. 
25’-35' Tape measure, adjustable square, adjustable bevel finder, pencils, 24” framing square, 2” Framing chisel, Utility knife + a few extra razor blades, clip board, scientific calculator with SIN-COS-TAN functions.  For a good source for framing chisels check out  www.Barrtools.com.  Every student will be able to choose a mallet turned from local Iron wood when you arrive.

NATURAL ENCLOSURE SYSTEMS July 18th- 20th.  After the Timber Framing workshop there will be a few days focusing on 3 alternative wall enclosure methods.  Straw bale, Wattle & dabb and Woodchip & clay infill.  We will construct a wall using each of the three methods.
 
LODGING
Free Camping on site is offered to anyone taking the workshop.  There will be solar showers and outhouses to accomadate you.  Listed below are some B&B & Inn within 10-20 minutes of the site.  There will be adjusted pricing for the length of stay for anyone in the workshop, just tell them your taking the Sustainable Building seminar in westfield.  Tuition Does Not cover Lodging off site.

DINING
Local catered meals provided: breakfast, lunch & dinner throughout the entire workshop for each student.  The town of Westfield has 7 organic farms, specializing in a wide variety of natural foods.  Tuition covers all dining expenses for each student.
